What inspired you to volunteer as a board member?

I’m thrilled to have taken on a new role as Chair for the Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) in 2024, after a journey of passionate involvement since 2010.

At the core of my commitment to BCRC lies a deep love for its mission: ensuring that no one faces breast cancer alone. My journey with BCRC began with my first ArtBra creation in 2010, igniting a lasting passion. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the creative lead for ArtBra, where I’ve been inspired by the incredible creations modeled by breast cancer clients.

Joining the board of directors two years ago marked a pivotal moment in my journey with BCRC, and I’m deeply honored to now serve as Chair. I’m eager to witness the growth and direction that BCRC will take this year as we continue to uphold our mission.

Outside of my dedicated volunteer work with BCRC, I’m also a seasoned Technical Recruiter in the video games industry, leveraging three decades of experience to connect individuals with opportunities that enhance their lives.

When I’m not volunteering or immersed in my professional endeavors, you can find me cherishing moments with my beloved family or at the barn taking horseback lessons!

I’m truly excited for the journey ahead and the positive impact we will continue to make at BCRC. Together, let’s ensure that no one ever walks the path of breast cancer alone.

Christal Murray, MD

Board Member

Hematologist and Medical Oncologist, Baylor Scott & White

What inspired you to volunteer as a board member?

I have seen BCRC’s impact in the Austin area for many years through my work as an oncologist. BCRC provides a unique service and support that many with breast cancer do not get elsewhere. I see daily the needs people have that cannot be met in the healthcare system directly. I have admired the work that they do and have been more than happy to support them with referrals, connections and educational programs. Given my job, family, church engagement and other interests, I was not looking for more to do. However, when I was asked if I would consider being on the board, it made perfect sense to me to be able to support BCRC in a more robust way to help them continue doing their good work.

What are three words you would use to describe BCRC?

Compassionate, Informative, Supportive

How long have you been involved with BCRC and in what capacity?

I first became familiar with BCRC through their navigators who (prior to COVID) would come with patients to their appointments. I saw the compassionate support they provided to people in an overwhelming and difficult time. I have had the privilege of attending Art Bra for many years which is a fundraiser supporting their work throughout the year, but also a wonderful celebration of those supported by BCRC. It has been a true joy to see my patients and others bravely model art bras to help BCRC continue their work. Additionally, I have been a part of some of the educational programs. Over the years, I have referred many patients to BCRC.

Gil Acosta

Board Member

Sr. Program Manager, Corporate Quality

What inspired you to volunteer as a board member?

In 1995, the same year BCRC was founded, my wife Linda was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Our son had just turned one. I first heard about BCRC through a founding member in our support group. Even then, I knew they were building something vital, filling a gap that insurance and traditional support couldn’t. Sadly, Linda never got to benefit from BCRC’s services. She passed just before BCRC launched the IV League, the country’s first metastatic support group. But I believed in the mission, and in her memory, I started fundraisers that became a foundation. I came to serve on the BCRC board for six years, including two years as president.

What are three words you would use to describe BCRC?

Vital, Caring, Service

How long have you been involved with BCRC and in what capacity?

I have been involved since the founding of the BCRC and in 2000, I joined the board, serving as president my last 2 years from 2005 – 2006. I continued my relationship with BCRC through the Linda P. Acosta foundation I started in my wife’s memory and to this day sponsor and support the BCRC. For 3 consecutive years, the LPA Foundation was the signature sponsor of Art Bra, and in 2025, I was honored with the Hands of Hope service award recognizing over $500K in donations and sponsorship over the last 30 years.

Retired volunteer and doing what I love best- serving and connecting people

What inspired you to volunteer as a board member?

My inspiration and desire to volunteer as a member of the BCRC board is driven by my desire to serve the many women who have battled and will continue to battle breast cancer. My niece was diagnosed with an exceedingly rare form of metastatic, triple negative breast cancer in 2020. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with breast cancer in 2023 just three months shy of her opportunity to model in the Art Bra Gala. The love and support she received from BCRC inspired me to get involved.
