Welcome BCRC’s newest Patient Navigator

Melissa Ruiz

We are thrilled that Melissa Ruiz joined the BCRC Patient Navigation team on July 2016.  Each day she provides guidance, support and assistance to our clients and caregivers that have been touched by breast cancer. Melissa also leads the South Austin Support Circle and co-facilitates our metastatic IV League support circle.

A little bit about Melissa: She was diagnosed with breast cancer just four days away from her 37th birthday in 2009. She underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. She had a re-occurrence in 2012, where she decided to do a bilateral mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy. Ultimately, she decided on the DIEP flap procedure for her reconstruction. Her first introduction to the BCRC was with her patient navigator, Runi, who visited her at the infusion room with a tote bag, a pillow and a friendly face. She attributes her successful treatments to the BCRC’s support and education.

Melissa has said that she made a promise to herself in 2010, “If I make it through all of this, I will share my knowledge with other women walking this path after me.” Melissa got involved with Capital of Texas Team Survivor (CTTS) in 2010 and did her first Triathlon with the help of the training she received with them.  CTTS is a wonderful nonprofit that provides free exercise programs to those with cancer.  In 2013, Melissa decided to take her “Cancer Trip” to visit Macchu Picchu and the Amazon. Most recently she completed her first Texas Mamma Jamma Ride.  This ride benefits 10 local organizations and BCRC is one of them!  Her backLorenzoground is in Medical Administration and Oncology Financial Counseling. She holds a BA in Business Administration from Concordia University.

She enjoys swimming, bike riding, and spending time with her two daughters, Chelsea and Emily. This year, she had a new addition to her family, her grandson Lorenzo.
