There is a good chance you have spoken to Katherine Knighten already since she is our amazing Support Specialist. We asked her a few questions for you to get to know her better.
When did you start working at the BCRC?
I started working at the BCRC in early June, so just under half a year.
What do you do for the BCRC?
The biggest part of my job at the BCRC is to be the first point of contact for our clients. Whether they have just been diagnosed, or are having recurring issues come back into their lives after a past diagnosis, our clients come to the BCRC to find calm in the storm and it is my job to provide that comfort. As the Support Specialist, it is also my responsibility to manage our client database to be sure that the data we report back to our funders is both accurate and complete. I also assist the Navigation team with any administrative tasks that increase our efficiency at the office.
What inspired you to work for the BCRC?
When I was in college, I got involved with Art Bra Austin and began volunteering each year. During this time, I was able to really appreciate the way that BCRC positively impacts the lives of not only their clients, but also their client’s friends and family. Even just being a volunteer, I loved being a part of something that so clearly helped these women feel inspired by themselves and by one another.
What did you do prior to your work at the BCRC?
Before joining the BCRC team, I studied Biology at Texas State University. During my years there, I was first Secretary and then Vice President of a non-profit student run volunteer organization, The Human Environmental Animal Team (H.E.A.T). H.E.A.T. is an organization dedicated to improving humanitarian, environmental, and animal welfare issues through Positive Activism. It was during my 4 years with the organization that I developed a passion for non-profit work.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love going to see live music, comedy, or theater (which is so easy to find here in Austin!). My dog, Lily, and I take as many trips to the Greenbelt as we can and I try to take spontaneous road trips or go camping somewhere nearby as often possible, but am just as likely to end up spending the weekend at home snuggled between Lily and my cat, Prince. I also love watching movies with my parents, who live in Bee Caves!
What do you enjoy most about working at the BCRC?
My favorite part about working at the BCRC is the hard work that each staff member puts into their position to make the organization the best it can be as a whole. Each member of the BCRC team gives 110% each and every day to give our clients the best support and guidance possible. If anyone is in need of a helping hand, whether it’s in or out of the office, you are more likely to have too many people on the BCRC team offering to help than not enough. I feel very lucky to be surrounded with so many positive, cooperative, and supportive staff members!
