In 2008, I was looking for an organization to join. They had to be local and had to be unique. I was looking for someone who had an immediate impact on their clients. I found BCRC and was so impressed with the way the staff interacted with their clients. It was as if they were all friends. Their conversations were full of love, full of support and understanding, and a genuine appreciation for one another. I loved what I saw and knew I had to be part of it.

My husband and I continued to volunteer for several years. We volunteered at outreach events and with Art Bra® Austin. I went on to volunteer in the As Sisters program. I would mow yards, sit with them in the infusion room, etc. It was, in fact, just like helping out a family member. In 2015 and 2016, I was even the Volunteer of the Year! I had more volunteer hours than anyone else in that program and I’m so proud of this accomplishment!

In 2015, I became a client and got to see just how that relationship worked from the inside. It wasn’t any different from my first impression all those years ago. My Patient Navigator guided me through this process. She taught me to ask questions, to try to understand as much as I can about my own cancer, and how to become my own patient advocate. I will always be grateful to her and all of BCRC.

In November 2017, I joined the BCRC staff as the Volunteer Manager. This was perfect for me! Now I get to provide our incredible volunteers with the opportunity to help those in our community. I am reminded every day what I loved about volunteering all those years ago. These volunteers are so passionate about their roles and are so thankless and kind. In June this year, the opportunity to expand into the Intake Specialist role was made available. Now I get to be the first voice of BCRC a new client hears. I love that I get to help people every single day!

In my spare time I am a wife, a mother of 2 grown daughters and mom to 3 rescue dogs. I enjoy creating period costumes and wearing them to different fairs and festivals. I am a wine/beer/food aficionado, and I am team captain for Team BCRC in the Texas Mamma Jamma Ride if you are interested in joining our fabulous team! Who needs sleep, right?
