30 Days of Artists: Nick Carter | Achillia

Nick Carter is a local abstract artist whose artwork can be found all around Austin. He was born and raised in Austin, Texas and currently lives with his beautiful wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Amira, in the neighboring community of Cedar Park. Growing up in such an artistic community was a big influence in Nick’s decision to attend Southwest Texas State, where he studied communication design and sculpting. While studying the masters of art, Nick learned that art is a form of communication that has less to do with what’s on the surface than it does with the story that is told underneath; that a story told without words can sometimes be clearer and more powerful than those that require them.

Achillia “Achillia” was inspired by the comparison of the Roman Gladiators going to battle and the strong women going through the battle with cancer – both groups fighting for their lives.

Many people do not know there were actual female Gladiators known as Gladiatrix during the Roman Empire. One of these powerful women was named Achillia. The Gladiators & Gladiatrix were ordinary citizens prior to being forced into becoming fighters. In remembering his own mother-in-law’s battle with cancer, Nick reflected on how women with breast cancer do not choose to become fighters either. Instead they become one as they fight each day to live. In the end, no matter the results, these women are warriors and “Achillia” is created out of respect for the brave battle they are fighting.

Nick created this piece to portray an elegant warrior’s armor. He began his creative process by using acrylic paint to cover the bra. Once painted, he applied hand-cut copper medallions, linked together by copper chains. Nick applied patina to the surface, and drill pressed the others with a circular pattern using a technique made popular with car enthusiasts in the 40’s & 50’s. A labor of love, it took Nick approximately 52 hours to complete his art bra masterpiece!

“Achillia” is created in honor of survivors, Jade Greenough and Irene Mattson, and in remembrance to a very talented artist taken way to soon, Nick’s mother in-law Solaie Sauter. In his own words, we learn just how deeply Solaie affected Nick and his work: “Without her encouraging me to stay with painting and not to give up, I would not be where I am at today.”
