30 Days of Artists: New York Artist Celebrates Metamorphosis

Art Bra Artist Marc WitmerMarc Witmer

New York-based fashion designer and Art Bra Austin newcomer Marc Witmer has a passion for fine art, a quirky sense of humor, and a belief that beauty should be approachable and fun — and all can be appreciated in his Art Bra creation. He started his journey in the arts as a student at the School of the Arts Institute in Chicago, where he received numerous designs awards. In 2003, Marc moved to New York to learn from and work alongside some of New York’s finest designers. He recently decided it was time to launch his own collection with business partner, Stephanie Hogue. Their brand, which launches in Fall 2015, is called Sweetcream New York – a contemporary and stylish line of dresses that addresses the needs of breastfeeding mothers. If his new line’s design is anywhere as beautiful as the elegant and feminine design of his art bra below – then we can surely expect great things from Sweetcream NY!

As the son, son-in-law and grandson of breast cancer survivors, Marc deeply understands and appreciates the value of resources like The Breast Cancer Resource Centers. He first learned of BCRC through his mother-in-law, Susan Sheppard, who is a recent breast cancer survivor, client of BCRC and member of BCRC’s Board of Directors. Marc writes, “She had used the BCRC during her treatment and recovery and spoke very highly of everything that you did.” We are equally as grateful to Marc for showing his support through his art and creating such an exquisite art bra!

Marc was originally inspired by the colors and patterns on the wings of the Monarch butterfly, but he was soon struck by the caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly and felt that it was a poignant representation of the change a person goes through after diagnosis. He used glass beads, Czech crystals and faux pearls for his bra and, after sketching out his design, hand sewed every piece onto the bra.

This piece of wearable art is intricately sewn, with details that are both stunning from afar as well as appreciated up close. The attention to fine detail speaks volumes to Marc’s level of talent and skill. We can’t wait to see this art bra sparkle on the Art Bra Runway!

All art bras will be auctioned off at BCRC’s signature charity event to raise funds to support local women affected by breast cancer. To learn more about Art Bra Austin, visit www.artbraaustin.org.
