30 Days of Artists: An artist and her 3 art bras

Christin Sherburne is a powerhouse Art Bra® Austin supporter, being a 3-year breast cancer survivor, BCRC client and 3-year Art Bra Artist and Model. “I love everything about this event and what it means for the breast cancer community,” Christin explains. She is a home business owner and loves nail art, fashion and wine tours. And somehow, in her spare time, she has found the passion and energy to create not one but three incredible bras for this year’s event. We are amazed by Christin!

Christin Sherburne
“Aurora Borealis”

Wanting to highlight the importance of a cancer survivor’s support system, Christin used faux fur, glass crystal beads, and Swarovski crystals to create a constellation-themed bra. The crystals on the top of each cup represent those shining stars who have gone before us, including Amber Gillespie and Holley Kitchen. The hand-strung beads below represent the community that has been created by survivors holding one another up. This stunning piece is touching and speaks of the strength of the community that the Breast Cancer Resource Center has cultivated. We think it’s a powerful tribute to all those touched by breast cancer.

“Hear Me Roar”

Inspired by the fierce strength she has witnessed within the breast cancer community, Christin got wild and used an animal theme to create her second bra. Using faux lion fur, glass jewels and leather, she arranged the elements and added a gold chain halter in place of the bra straps. Christin created this bra to model herself, and added a pelt cape and skirt to complete the ensemble. We are inspired by Christin’s strength and passion, and
think this creation will perfectly highlight her energy.

“The Eyes Have It”

Desiring to underscore the importance of self-examination, Christin used dozens of plastic wiggle eyes, fringe, tassels and Swarovski crystals to create this whimsical yet important bra. Because Christin found her own cancer through self-exam, she wanted her 3rd creation to emphasize knowing one’s body and using your eyes to be aware of your breast health. She covered each cup with the wiggle eyes and used the fringe to suggest eyelashes, proving that something that can make you laugh, can also make you think. Thank you, Christin, for your dedication and commitment to Art Bra® Austin!

All art bras will be auctioned off at BCRC’s signature charity event to raise funds to support local women affected by breast cancer. To learn more about Art Bra Austin, visit www.artbraaustin.org
