As a Native Austinite, Suvi loves to create big works of public art. Sometimes art can be overly serious, somber and so thought-provoking that you forgot what you were supposed to be thinking. But if you are artist Suvi Aika, it wouldn’t occur to you to create that way. For Suvi, she loves creating art that makes people feel gleeful, so she incorporates what she calls “sparkly magic” into her whimsical style. Take a look at her Art Bra and we’re sure you’ll feel all these things and more.
“Summertime Shimmer & Shake”
A first time Art Bra artist, this native Austinite has a double major in Political Science and Fine Art. Suvi created this playful yet sophisticated bra in honor of her grandmother Tyyne Murto Karttunen, who battled breast cancer, and was inspired to participate this year by watching Dianne Sonnenberg create her submission to this year’s Art Bra event. Suvi used glitter ribbon and shapes, paper flowers, felt flower, and a shiny plastic butterfly and arranged the materials on a black bra until she achieved the composition she was going for. She says that this whimsical bra comes with an accompanying smile and a twinkle in the eye.
Suvi invites everyone to see Fairy Alley, the public alley she is painting, with the City’s permission, as a gigantic koi pond. The closest address is 1507 Treadwell St. The alley runs beside this house, adjacent to Lamar Union.
ART BRA AUSTIN
All art bras will be auctioned off at BCRC’s signature charity event to raise funds to support local women affected by breast cancer. To learn more about Art Bra Austin, visit www.artbraaustin.org.
