This Is Why I Ride, by Patient Navigator Runi Limary

Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 5.52.26 PMThe Texas Mamma Jamma Ride is a non-profit organization which began in 2009 to raise awareness and much needed funds for our central Texas neighbors coping with breast cancer. This collaborative event saves and improves lives by supporting 10 local nonprofit organizations providing a wide variety of supportive services to people in our community.  The BCRC is lucky enough to be one of the beneficiaries.

In its inaugural year I volunteered to be a cheerleader at the finish line.  I watch and cheered my lungs out when each person rolled through the finishing line.  I remember being overcome with emotions as I saw my clients roll on through.  Some of them had completed treatment.  Some of them were still in treatment!

From that day forth I realized that I wanted to ride in the Mamma Jamma Ride in order to raise funds and to ride in honor of all my clients past and present.  I was so nervous because I didn’t even own a road bike!  The Mamma Jamma Ride provides training rides throughout the summer and I religiously attended them on my mountain bike.  With their support I rode over 70 miles my first year and then wisely upgraded to a road bike.  As of October 26, 2013 I’ve ridden over 200 miles at the Mamma Jamma Ride!
