Frequently Asked Questions

Is Breast Cancer Resource Center part of St. David's Medical Center?

BCRC is not part of St. David's Medical Center. St. David's generously donates some of our office space as does Seton Family of Hospitals, but we are an independent non-profit organization that interacts with all of the hospital systems in our 10 county service area.

How is Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas different than the Susan G. Komen Foundation?

Susan G. Komen Foundation, Austin Affiliate, is a fundraising organization that raises money for research and provides local nonprofits like the BCRC funding so we can provide direct services to the underserved community.

I'm looking for a doctor; can BCRC tell me who I should go to?

We do not refer clients to medical professionals. We encourage women to request a referral from their family or OB-GYN doctor.

Do I have to be newly diagnosed with breast cancer to get help from a Patient Navigator?

No, you do not have to be newly diagnosed to take advantage of our services. Many of our clients come to us after they have completed treatment. Our Certified Patient Navigators offer assistance through diagnosis, treatment and beyond; and all of our services are free of charge.

What are the BCRC Patient Navigators' credentials?

Staff members attend training and conferences throughout the year and are nationally certified as Patient Navigators through the Harold P. Freeman Institute for Patient Navigation.

How do you ensure client privacy?

Every Patient Navigator completes HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) training. All client conversations and associated data are confidential and stored in a secure place.

Can I donate my wig or prosthesis to BCRC?

BCRC accepts wigs and prosthesis based on our need at the time of inquiry. Our limited space restricts us from accepting all donations. Contact Rachel Shaefer at rshaefer@bcrc.org for questions regarding wig or prosthesis donations.

How do I make a donation in honor or in memory of a loved one?

If you visit the homepage and select the 'Donate' button, it will allow you to make a tax deductible donation online and note if it is in honor or in memory of a friend or family member. If you are a mailing a check, please send it to Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas, PO Box 300040, Austin, TX 78703. Note in the memo if the check is in honor or memory of someone and let us know who we should notify of your contribution. What is Art Bra Austin and how can I get involved?

Art Bra Austin, BCRC's Signature Fundraiser, is a runway show featuring an eclectic collection of art bras modeled by BCRC clients, reflecting the diversity of the women we serve. The array of Art Bras featured in the live and silent auctions are submitted by professional artists and designers, celebrities, organizations, and supporters of BCRC. To volunteer, secure a sponsorship, buy tickets, or get more information on this unique event, please visit www.artbraaustin.org.

I want to do a fundraiser for BCRC, is there any paperwork I need to do?

BCRC has the distinct pleasure of being the beneficiary of more than 40 third party events each year. If you're interesting in organizing and producing a third party event to benefit BCRC, please review our third party event guidelines. To support our fundraising partners, BCRC will happily advertise and promote the events through our website and social media channels. Depending on the size and type of event, we can also provide staff, volunteers, and/or speakers. If you have additional questions, please contact Kate Rahill at krahill@bcrc.org / 512-524-2470 x 106
